Can Dogs Fly On Qatar Airways?

Sometimes it’s impossible to leave our furry friends at home when we’re heading out for a vacation. While there are some airports that have no problem with you having a pet in tow, not all airlines allow you to travel with your dog. It’s important to verify and research ones that do, if you can’t leave Fido behind.

So can dogs fly on Qatar Airways? Yes, you can bring your dog (your cat and even your pet falcon) on Qatar Airways. Not only will they welcome your dog onboard, but they will also take very good care of him/her. There are some breed and age restrictions, as well as special requirements, to read up on to ensure that the trip goes smoothly.

Make sure to prepare your pet passport and bring the proper documentation. You will also need to let them know ahead of time, at least 48 hours in advance, that you’ll need to bring your dog along with you.

What Are The Breed/Age Restrictions?

There are some breeds that fare better than others when it comes to the heat. Dogs that have issues with maintaining and regulating their body heat, and therefore are at a higher risk of suffering from heat stroke, will not be allowed. This includes popular breeds like pit bull terriers, bichon fries, boxers, mastiffs, chow chows, pugs, and shih tzus, among others.

There are some dog breeds that are also known to not be able to deal with stress that make the list, too. Make sure to review the full list of restricted breeds on Qatar Airway’s site. If you’re concerned about traveling with your dogs breed, but don’t see it on the list, you may want to make a call directly to the airline and inquire about it.

Age and health are also big factors to consider. Puppies under 12 weeks of age, pregnant dogs, and sick and/or fragile dogs will not be allowed on board. In some instances exceptions may be made if you are able to secure clearance from your vet. For example if your dog is more than 6 weeks pregnant you likely won’t be able to bring them unless your vet has certified that there’s no risk of your dog giving birth during the trip and that it’s fine and fit to travel.

What Documentation Will I Need?

For Qatar Airways you will need to show proof that your pup is fit to fly. This includes bringing up-to-date documents like a recent health certificate, vaccination records, and any other pertinent documentation. If you’re unsure if you have everything in order you can always call the reservation department at Qatar Airways.

You should remember to notify them that you will be bringing your dog at least 48 hours in advance anyway, so you can ask any questions you might have regarding your flight and verify if you have everything necessary to ensure a seamless trip for you and your dog at that time. Knowing what to expect should help ease any concerns you may have.

What About Emotional Support Dogs & Service Dogs?

In most cases emotional support dogs and service dogs are allowed to fly in the cabin with you. Bringing a dog with you onto the flight comes with its own strict set of rules to follow. This includes where the dog must stay, what seats you may and may not occupy, cleaning up any accidents, and keeping full control of your dog throughout the entire duration of the flight.

You will also have to provide proof that you require traveling with an ESA. It must be a letter from your mental health doctor (with their letterhead) that is not older than 1 year.

Any other dog that does not have the training and paperwork required of a service dog will need to be kenneled and kept in the cargo hold of the plane. It is up to you to provide proper equipment for your dog. The kennel must be large enough and have proper ventilation. You must also provide adequate food and water and bowls.

The proper size of the kennel is based on certain measurements of your dog. The length needs to be the length of your dog plus half the length of their legs, the height needs to be at least as tall as your pup, and the width should be twice the width of your dog’s shoulders. You can see a full diagram of this on their website. You may be turned away if these requirements are not met.

How Much Will It Cost To Bring My Dog On Qatar Airways?

The cost of bringing your dog will depend on its size and the method you’re bringing it. If your dog is an ESA and will be boarding the flight with you it should be counted as checked baggage for free. If your dog will be traveling in its kennel in the cargo hold the cost will depend on its size and weight.

You can find out the rates either by reviewing their website or contacting one of the reservation department representatives. The prices typically range from $200 up to $450 one way.
